Finding Quality Employees

Picture this.

You finally start the job of your dreams. The boss is great, you get to work with animals and be outside all day and you’re learning.

But….

They don’t really know what's going on.

Everyone is always stressed around you.

There are no processes in place.

You have no idea where to find anything.

And each person is telling you to do something different.

How would that feel….

I felt overwhelmed just writing that!

Not great. Disorganized to say the least. And if this were to happen often - would you stay?

One of the keys to finding the employees of your dreams is to have a solid foundation for your business.

So what does that actually mean?

Core values - these are the main driver of every and all decisions that are made in your business. Ensure your new hire has the same core values as your business - it will make the decision-making a lot easier.

  1. Standard Operating Procedures - clear processes and manuals provide consistency, so no matter who is doing the job, they know EXACTLY what to do. (Imagine how much time this could save on training)!

  2. Understand timing & tasks - If you haven’t already done so, you should write out a list of everything that needs to be done on the farm and how much time each task would take you vs. someone new. Take both times and find the average. This will help you understand how much help you need and what tasks they will be doing.

  3. Be clear - you need to decide BEFORE you hire anyone, what qualities they need, how many hours you need them for and WHAT you want them to do on a regular basis.

  4. Have a contract with clear guidelines and expectations -  I know this sounds like a lot, but trust me - if it’s ever needed it could save your butt. Having a contract means you can have something to go back to for any questions, concerns or possible future issues. It can cover sick time, COVID protocols and more! (obviously get legal advice, I am NOT a Lawyer).

  5. Trust your gut - You don’t always have to be the nice guy. Just because someone is nice, doesn't mean they are the right fit.

I know once you have these clearly outlined, the hiring process will be smoother!

Each farm's needs are different and there truly are many different options. If you are curious about what I do or how we can work together, check out my website here or book a complimentary consultation HERE
